I Say, America, PUSH! (Emancipation 2013)

Spread the Wings and break the shackles

“Spread the Wings and Break the Shackles” Captured by Yogendra Joshi

A One-Act Poem: I Say, America, Push!

Scene One
Curtain opens
Center stage
Woman reads from script
Her lines stick like crazy glue
She opens wide her lips
And pushes out each syllable
One by one
With a pink wet tongue
RE-GEN-ER-A-TION
RES-TO-RA-TION
RES-O-LU-TION
RE-LEASE
RE-TURN
RE-PEAL
hatehatehatehatehatehate
hatehatehatehatehatehate
I RE-PEAT
RE-VOKE
hatehatehatehatehatehate
hatehatehatehatehatehate
I RE-PEAT
RE-SCIND
hatehatehatehatehatehate
hatehatehatehatehatehate
Woman exits stage right
Curtain closes

Scene Two
Curtain opens
Dark and empty stage
Setting is heavy and humid
As drenched syllables
Continue to echo forth from backstage
RE-BIRTH
RE-VI-VAL
RE-NEW-AL
RES-UR-REC-TION
Re-birth
Re-vi-val
Re-new-al
Res-ur-rec-tion
RE-BIRTH
RE-VI-VAL
RE-NEW-AL
RES-UR-REC-TION
Jarring foreign sounds
Butting up against
Constitution
Class and emotion
Curtain closes

Scene Three
Curtain opens
Woman enters stage left
And reads from script
She opens wide her lips
And calls us by name
One by one

Once and for all
With rare intellect
Dignity
And a fine mood
Curtain closes
